Italian media criticise form of rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target

A feature from the Gazzetta dello Sport has criticised the form of Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, and has claimed Tottenham Hotspur may have made contact with the wing-back regarding a potential move to England.

Dumfries joined Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021 and has struggled to win over some Italian fans it seems. Despite seven goals and ten assists in 68 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt), the player could be set to leave in the immediate future.

Gazzetta previously reported Dumfries was a target for Tottenham Hotspur, should their pursuit of Pedro Porro fail. It is believed that both Chelsea and Aston Villa are also among the admirers for the Dutch international (InterLive).

The 26-year-old was in fine form for the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, adding a goal and two assist to his tally for his country (Transfermarkt).

Inter are believed to be keen to sell Dumfries, with a view to funding their own transfer moves in the summer (CalcioMercatoWeb). According to the latest opinions in Italy, it seems that Dumfries is having a difficult spell in the eyes of some in the media.

The feature cites how Dumfries “didn’t break through” since his return from the World Cup, lamenting his recent own goal, a so-called “flop in the Italian cup against Parma,” and suggest his time on the bench of late could be an indicator of Dumfries losing favour with the Italian giants.

The piece also states that Dumfries is “certainly among” those who could be sold by the club, and suggests Tottenham Hotspur have already spoken to the player, which could have unsettled him.

Spurs Web Opinion

Things really don’t sound like they’re going well for Dumfries out in Italy, and we should take this into account when weighing up a move. If he’s in bad form, whether that be due to a lack of focus or not, that’s not really the kind of player Antonio Conte needs in his squad.
