Italian media reveal how Spurs star Guglielmo Vicario did on his international debut

Guglielmo Vicario’s debut for his country has received a mixed reception, with some Italian outlets still not completely convinced by the Tottenham man.

Many will feel that Vicario’s first cap was a long time coming as not only had the 27-year-old been one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A during the previous two seasons but he has also shown this season that he can cope with the pressure of playing for a club like Spurs.

In fact, according to FBREF’s PSxG minus goals allowed metric, the Tottenham number one has saved more goals this season than any other goalkeeper across the Premier League (Football365).

Vicario finally got his just reward on Sunday, with Luciano Spaletti handing him his first cap in Italy’s 2-0 win over Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Speaking after the game, the Spurs star admitted his delight at making his international debut and refused to set a limit on what he can achieve for the Azzuri (RAI Sport via TMW).

Guglielmo Vicario didn’t have much to do on Italy debut

However, not everyone was impressed with Vicario’s showing, with The Cult of Calcio handing him a rating of 6/10 and writing about the goalkeeper: “Except for one shot in the second half, the Spurs goalkeeper didn’t have an awful lot to do between the sticks. Though he looked clumsy at times when receiving back passes.”

Sky Italia gave the Tottenham star a rating of 6.5/10 but they were a little more complimentary about the goalkeeper, writing: “Concentrated and lively, he gets rid of the ball quickly.

“He is not stupid, nor does he want to seem so. He doesn’t even have a way to look like it with his hands, because the Ecuadorians find it difficult. But he is there.”

It was only natural for Vicario to be a little nervous on his debut and the goalkeeper would need a couple of more chances to showcase his best in an Italy shirt.

However, it is difficult to see him getting many chances, with Gianluigi Donnarumma being not just the established number one but also one of the leaders of the side.
