Italy legend claims some Liverpool tackles on Spurs stars were worth ’10-match ban’

Italy legend Marco Tardelli has labelled Liverpool’s display against Tottenham as ‘arrogant’ and claims some of their challenges on Antonio Conte’s players could have warranted 10-match bans.

Both sides played out an intense 2-2 draw at the the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday in a match full of action and controversy.

Harry Kane opened the scoring after just six minutes before Diogo Jota equalised for Jurgen Klopp’s side midway through the first-half.

Tottenham fashioned a host of good opportunities to take the lead but couldn’t capitalise when Andy Robertson nodded Liverpool ahead in the second period.

But Spurs were handed a gift just moments later after Alisson’s miscue allowed Heung-min Son to roll in an equaliser into an empty net.

The leveller came just before Liverpool left-back Robertson was sent off for a kick-out at Emerson Royal, which sparked controversy given Kane had escaped with just a caution for a rash tackle on the Scotsman earlier in the game.

Former Italy and Juventus midfielder Tardelli, who had been looking at Liverpool’s display ahead of the Champions League last 16 clash against Inter Milan, was far from impressed with the Reds’ conduct in North London.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I hear people say that Liverpool are unplayable, but no team is, especially against this Inter side.

“The important thing is that Inter play with this same hunger and desire to play football. They need a different level of intensity with Liverpool and also a better rapport with the referee.

“The fouls that Liverpool players did against Tottenham [on Sunday], they’d have received a 10-match ban in Italy.

“Besides, Liverpool are almost arrogant in the way they play, all too aware of how strong they are and the protection that they enjoy.”

The match on Sunday was one of the most intense Spurs have been involved in for a while and it wasn’t surprising to see the game boil over briefly. Conte is getting the side playing his way which is a positive sign of things to come.
