‘It’s a big game’ – Mark Lawrenson predicts Newcastle vs Tottenham score

Mark Lawrenson has backed Newcastle United to bounce back from their loss against Aston Villa and edge past Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

Spurs travel to St James’ Park knowing that they need a result to stay in the race for Champions League qualification.

Manchester United have already built a substantial lead over the Lilywhites following the results last weekend, with the Red Devils now sitting six points clear with a game in hand.

The Magpies also have a game in hand over Spurs and they too can go six points clear of Cristian Stellini’s men with a win later today.

Tottenham can perhaps take some confidence from the fact that Eddie Howe’s men are also coming into this fixture on the back of a poor display after being thumped 3-0 at Villa Park.

However, Lawrenson believes that Newcastle’s defeat against Villa was nothing more than an anomaly and backed them to get back to winning ways at home.

The pundit told Paddy Power about this afternoon’s clash: “Newcastle disappeared last week which is most unusual for them because even when they don’t play well they’re usually really difficult to beat.

“Tottenham did what Tottenham do. Spursy as we all know them. I’m going to go for Newcastle to win.

“Obviously, it’s a big game for both teams but I just don’t know what happens with Tottenham from one week to the next, I really don’t.”

Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even the most optimistic of Spurs fans would not be expecting us to get anything from the game today. We certainly do not deserve to finish in the top four, given how poorly we have played this season.

However, having said that, if we somehow manage to sneak a win today, we would stand a very good chance of doing getting top four as Newcastle could crumble under the pressure, having not experienced the dizzying heights of the top four for a long time.
