“It’s about time they should win something” – Former Spur has his say

Former Spur, Dimitar Berbatov told Betfair Spurs must win a trophy this season to prove themselves amongst the best in the Premier League.

Spurs have not lifted silverware since 2008 when Berbatov’s penalty helped the Lilywhites lift the League Cup against London rivals, Chelsea.

Since then, Spurs have come agonisingly close to tasting cup glory having lost in two League Cup finals and four FA Cup semi-finals.

Berbatov told Betfair:

“It’s about time they should win something, I’ve said this before, they have everything they need; a new training ground, soon the new stadium, a great boss, a great team, the only thing they’re missing is something to show off for it.”

“They need that factor. Players want to have something at their career to show their achievements in the form of silverware, been there and done this.”

“When they get that winning mentality with a cup or something similar, then they’ll have more hunger for the bigger titles,” the 37-year-old added.

However, Berbatov believes with a striker of the ability Harry Kane has anything is possible for Spurs:

“I think the top Premier League goalscorer will be Harry Kane,” he said.

“Out of those three (Kane, Lukaku and Aubameyang), I would have to say Kane. He had a tremendous World Cup campaign, will have even more confidence in himself and these aspects helps a striker.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. It is apparent we’re not going to sign a big name, or indeed any notable player, before the deadline.
But that’s OK. Let’s just ensure we hang on to Dembele, Aldeweireld and Rose, and with players like Winks
coming back, and Nkoudou showing signs of improvement (plus the young guys who did great
on the recent tour), we really do have a great squad. The envy, in fact, of many big clubs.
Some of our best players will be even better this term, and everything is in place for
    overall and continued progression.
The only problem we have, in terms of getting over the finishing line and winning trophies,
is our mentality. That won’t alter if new players come in and others leave.
This important change/strengthening in mentality has to come from within.
Spurs have to finally come of age this season, and realise that we have everything in place to be a top top club ..and that we can finally succeed in winning the trophies we deserve!!
The World Cup proved we are blessed with many of the top players in the world.
Let’s now just put it all together, with our new stadium, our great coach, and this fine squad.
