“It’s been tough” – Ledley King admits his ‘hurt’ over Spurs’ failure to return to glory

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ledley King has admitted that the club’s fourteen year wait to win a piece of competitive silverware has been too long.

King captained Tottenham to the last time they enjoyed success when Juande Ramos’ side beat Avram Grant’s Chelsea after extra time in the League Cup back in 2008.

Tottenham have come close on a number of occasions since but have failed to get over the line since that day at Wembley with three League Cup final defeats, a heartbreaking Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in 2019 and a second-place Premier League finish in 2016/17 behind Leicester City.

The north Londoners only hope of silverware this season solely rests on their FA Cup campaign, where they will face Championship outfit Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on March 1st.

King believes that Antonio Conte’s current squad deserves the glory of winning a trophy and has been left hurt by the number of near-misses the club have experienced in previous finals.

He told Sky Sports: “Fourteen years is too long,

“It’s been tough. They’ve come so close on so many occasions.

“I’m a fan as well, so it hurts me when we lose finals.

“I believe this group of players deserve to win a trophy, they deserve that feeling and to get over the line.

“It’s easier said than done though, as there’s so many good teams in the Premier League, so it’s very tough.”
