‘It’s never enough’ – Heung-min Son says Spurs squad need to ‘demand more’ from each other

Son Heung-min described Tottenham’s performance against Newcastle United as ‘fantastic’ but admitted that he and his teammates need to continue to show the same ruthlessness in the final third.

The main issue that has been plaguing Spurs over the last few weeks is their inability to take the game away from the opposition even when they are being completely dominant.

That has come back to cost Tottenham a number of times since the start of November, with Ange Postecoglou appearing to be at the end of his patience following the loss against West Ham United on Thursday.

The Aussie coach got a response from his players against Newcastle, with the away side being blown away by wave after wave of attacks from the Lilywhites.

This time, Spurs, led by Son, showed a lot more conviction in the final third, with the South Korean delivering an outstanding display after being moved back to the left flank.

Spurs squad need to demand more and more

The Tottenham captain remarked after the game that Spurs have all the ingredients to be a top side, stating that the players need to continue pushing each other on the pitch.

Speaking after the 4-1 win, Son told Sky Sports: “When you’re winning you enjoy it more. To bounce back like that is very important. We don’t want to make any more mistakes like we have done. I thought today was fantastic. I hope we can continue to perform like this and stay humble.

“We said we had to be more ruthless. We were ruthless today and were creating chances. We did a fantastic job. To beat Newcastle 4-1 is not easy. They are a very strong side, so credit all the players and fans.

“We are playing in the Premier League, we have to demand each other more and more. It’s never enough. Those amazing teams always keep going. It should be a habit for us. If we continue to be strong like this, we will be a very good side.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Postecoglou’s message about the players needing to show more conviction certainly filtered through, with the likes of Son, Johnson and Kulusevski taking more responsibility against Newcastle rather than second-guessing themselves in the final third.
