‘It’s not what we wanted’ – Kane insists Spurs ‘need to improve’ after Chelsea draw

Harry Kane has admitted that Tottenham need to improve from their showing at Stamford Bridge if they are to consistently produce results over the course of the season.

The home side were dominant for almost the entire 90 minutes but despite going a goal down twice, Spurs managed to draw level on both occasions.

Kane rose the highest to glance Ivan Perisic’s corner kick into the far corner in stoppage time to help the Lilywhites win a point in dramatic fashion.

The 29-year-old celebrated with a raucous away section at Stamford Bridge, and he admitted that while it was a special feeling to see the ball hit the back of the net, the performance from the team was below par on the day.

Kane told Spurs Play: “I flicked the corner on and couldn’t see where the ball went, next I saw it nestle into the back of the net. It was a great feeling to do it in front of the away fans, always special.

“It’s nice to come away with the draw. I don’t think it was our greatest game, so good to get something out of it… but, for sure, we need to improve going forward if we want to be consistent at the highest level.”

The England captain praised the character the team showed to come back twice but insisted there is still a lot of work to do to get to the level that Spurs want to.

Kane added: “The character has been good, and this shows good passion and determination to go again and get another equaliser.

“At 1-1, emotions were high, I thought we could have controlled things better, we got a bit sloppy in our shape and we were so wide open for their second goal. We need to improve on that.

“As a team, we’re working every day to improve, we’ll watch this one back as a team this week and see what we can get better at but, whenever you score an equaliser in a big game like this at the end, it gives us a nice feeling walking away.

“It’s not time to get carried away, for sure, but we had a terrible record against Chelsea last season, so to come here and get a point… it’s not what we wanted before the game, but as the game wore on, I think we’ll be the happier team, for sure.

“There is still a lot to improve on, we’re working hard, the manager has his ideas and we’re working every week to implement them. He knows we can be better, we know we can be better and that’s what we’ve got to try to do.”

I thought Tuchel once again out-did Conte tactically on Sunday. However, the pleasing part to me was the fact that the Italian had the firepower on the bench to change the game, which was not the case last season, and all the four players who came on had an impact.
