‘It’s terrifying’ – Pundit raves about Spurs squad and backs them to win silverware

Former Coventry City forward, Noel Whelan has raved about the squad that Tottenham have built and backed them to win a trophy this season with Jose Mourinho at the helm.

Few pundits gave Spurs a chance of finishing in the top four at the start of the campaign (BBC Sport).

However, the Lilywhites had one of the best transfer windows of any team in the division as they systematically went about addressing one weakness after another.

By bringing seven players in, Mourinho now boasts of a plethora of options, with two players in every position across the pitch.

The squad has been put to good use at the start of the campaign as Tottenham have had an extremely busy schedule over the last two months.

Mourinho’s men now sit just two points off Liverpool at the top of the league, have progressed to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup and look on course to progress from their group in the Europa League.

Whelan admitted that Spurs’ options, particularly in attacking areas, are terrifying but suggested that they might not have it in them to challenge for the league title.

The pundit told Football Insider: “With a manager like Jose Mourinho in charge, they can certainly win a trophy. Challenging for the title is more difficult, as Liverpool and Man City are the favourites, for me.

“But Spurs are definitely a different team this season – more organised, stronger squad, plenty of attacking options.

“Honestly? Their attack, it’s terrifying – you’ve got Harry Kane and Son [Heung-Min], who are world class. Throw in Gareth Bale, he can be amazing if he gets fully fit, and then the back-up men like Lucas Moura, [Steven] Bergwijn, Vinicius, these are all top players.

“It’s a team set up to attack with [Tanguy] Ndombele, [Giovani] Lo Celso, and [Moussa] Sissoko in midfield, [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg the holding midfielder, who looks a really good signing. Harry Winks as well.

“The defence isn’t the best but they are still good players and this is a team that will score lots of goals. I can’t believe how they can freeze out Dele Alli and sell Christian Eriksen and be even stronger.”
