‘It’s the truth’ – Former Spurs star opens up on being coached by Mourinho

Erik Lamela has praised the mentality of Jose Mourinho and says he had an enjoyable time being coached by him during his relatively brief stint at Tottenham.

The Portuguese coach had a very mixed time in North London after being appointed as the club’s manager following Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking in November 2019.

Dubbed widely as ‘The Special One’, many touted Mourinho to be the face in the dugout to finally crack the Spurs curse in terms of silverware.

However, the closest he came to achieving that was reaching the Carabao Cup final last season, before being relieved of his duties six days before the match amidst a poor run of form in the lead-up to the clash.

Argentine winger Lamela, who now plies his trade with La Liga side Sevilla, has opened up on what it was like to be coached by Mourinho.

He was a favourite of the Portuguese and Lamela has revealed that he gave his best for the club despite not achieving the results he would have wanted.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “Jose is an amazing coach. His mentality is amazing. He tried his best for the club — I can say that because it’s the truth. I know how hard he worked for Tottenham; he was a great guy as well and I enjoyed the time with him.”

Mourinho definitely split opinion during his time at the club, but you could see that he wanted to bring back success here. It was a gamble from the club to bring in a manager like him after being led by Pochettino for so long, and it unfortunately did not pay off.
