Despite Neal Maupay’s best efforts to wind up James Maddison tonight, it was the Tottenham Hotspur man who came out on top with the Lilywhites taking all three points from the game against Brentford on a night involving plenty of darts celebrations.
James Maddison was finally back in the Spurs starting line-up tonight for the visit of Brentford, and he made his presence known throughout the game with a typically dynamic and influential performance.
The playmaker was the centre of attention in the first half, though not because of his own impact on the game. When Neal Maupay gave Brentford the lead, the striker decided to imitate Maddison’s now iconic darts celebration, and then proceeded to have an intense discussion with the Spurs midfielder.
Maddison had the last laugh, however, with his side coming out of the blocks in the second half and firing three goals past Brentford. Funnily enough, both Brennan Johnson and Richarlison also decided a darts celebration was the perfect way to enjoy the goals, too.

Maddison pokes fun at Maupay’s goalscoring record
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Maddison was asked about the heated exchange with Maupay, and he had a hilarious explanation.
He said: “I just said to him, he probably hasn’t scored enough goals of his own in the last few years to have his own celebration, so he had to copy mine. A short story, but it ended well for us.”
Maddison then wasted no time in taking to Instagram to rub further salt into the wound, sharing a slideshow featuring an image of Maupay’s celebration, followed by Maddison’s own joy at the turnaround, and a screenshot of the final result. He captioned the post, “A short story… COYS.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I love this response from James Maddison, and he clearly is very happy that he’s been able to get the better of Maupay in the end. We have sorely missed not only his skills on the pitch, but his talent for winding up an opponent.
