James Maddison tipped for Tottenham stay even after relegation, and there is one big reason

A Tottenham insider has backed one of Spurs’ best players to stay with the club this summer, no matter what happens over the coming weeks.

Spurs are locked in a battle for Premier League survival, with relegation appearing an increasingly likely outcome with each passing week.

Relegation from the Premier League would have devastating financial implications for Tottenham, who may be forced to cash in on some of their big earners.

Reports indicate that there could be a mass exodus from Spurs if they go down this season, but one key midfielder has now been backed to stay.

James Maddison is expected to stay at Tottenham

James Maddison has missed the entire season so far after picking up an ACL injury in pre-season, and the Lilywhites have certainly missed his creative flair.

One would expect the former Leicester man to attract plenty of interest this summer should the club get relegated, but former Tottenham scout Mick Brown believes that the midfielder will be tempted to stay at N17 even if it means spending a season in the Championship.

Brown told Football Insider: “Maddison is going to be an interesting one. If the reports on his recovery are positive and he returns for Tottenham in pre-season, there could be an opportunity to bring him in on a bargain deal.

“If Tottenham are relegated, they’re going to struggle to keep hold of players and they’ll have to sell, so the opportunity will be there for clubs like Villa.

“From Maddison’s point of view, though, I think there’s a strong possibility he could stay at Spurs. The major factor for him is getting back fit and playing, and I would think he needs a good pre-season to get back playing first and foremost.

“If he can do that and get back to form early in the season with Tottenham, whichever league they might be in, then it might be something he looks at in January. The big thing for him, though, is returning to playing regularly and that might mean turning down interest from elsewhere and staying at Spurs.”

Spurs youngster wants to stay despite interest from European elite

Over the last few weeks, reports have claimed that Archie Gray is of interest to the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Some sources have said that Tottenham would be willing to sell the midfielder for £55m, having paid £40m to sign him from Leeds United in 2024.

However, it was claimed by SportsBoom a couple of days ago that Gray has informed Spurs that he is willing to stay even if the club get relegated.
