Jamie Carragher claims 28-year-old faces ‘conundrum’ amid rumoured Spurs interest

Jamie Carragher believes that rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Danny Ings faces a tough decision over his future.

Ings is set to enter the final year of his contract with Southampton and previous reports have indicated that Spurs are preparing to test the water with an offer this summer.

However, Alasdair Gold said two weeks ago that the 28-year-old is not keen on the prospect of joining Spurs and playing second fiddle to Kane while Football Insider reported that the North Londoners might pull out from the race since they have not been given much encouragement that Ings wants to sign for the club.

The Saints star has also been linked with a move to Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola said to view the striker as Sergio Aguero’s potential replacement.

Carragher believes that the England international faces a tough decision on whether to stay at the St Mary’s and be the main man or to go to a top side and play a bit-part role.

He said on Sky Sports Football (5:46pm, April 12, 2021): “It is almost that awkward thing where Danny Ings is the top player, if you like, for Southampton.

“If he made that move, it would be tough for him to play week in week out for a Champions League team.

“There is always that conundrum for a player, ‘Do you want to play every week and be the star man, or maybe go to a team in the Champions League?’ That’s maybe the conundrum he has got right at this minute.”

Spurs Web Opinion

After Ings’ struggles at Liverpool, I am not sure he would want to risk going to City and warming the bench for the majority of the season. Unfortunately, I also do not see him coming to Spurs if both Kane and Son stay. I would not be surprised if Ings uses the interest from the likes of Spurs and City to possibly get a new bumper contract at Southampton.
