Jamie Carragher lays into Spurs star for ‘stupid’ decision at Stamford Bridge

Jamie Carragher has labelled Cristian Romero’s decision to pull Marc Cucurella’s hair as a ‘stupid thing to do’.

There were plenty of controversial incidents both during and after the London derby at Stamford Bridge, not least the altercations between the two managers after the final whistle.

However, the incident that incensed Thomas Tuchel the most was Romero pulling Cucurella’s before Harry Kane’s stoppage-time equaliser.

The Chelsea boss insisted in his post-match press conference that the Tottenham centre-back should have been sent off for the incident and the away side’s equaliser, therefore, should not have stood (Hayters TV).

Romero is not expected to receive any retrospective punishment as VAR reportedly reviewed the incident during the game (Simon Stone).

The Argentine had already got into an altercation with Kai Havertz before the Cucurella incident and Carragher was extremely critical of the Tottenham star for his decision-making.

The pundit said about the incident on Sky Sports Super Sunday (broadcast on 14/8; 6:56): “It was a stupid thing to do. He (Romero) looked like he was destined to get sent off with the coming together he was having with Havertz at one stage, wasn’t he? He wasn’t letting that go.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see why many Spurs fans enjoy Romero’s antics. However, I do worry that the centre-back will cost us a game or two by getting sent off if he does not control himself.

I do agree with Carragher’s assessment as Romero could have potentially cost us a point on Sunday. I would not be surprised if Conte has a word with the defender, asking him to be calmer.
