Jamie Carragher makes top four prediction between Spurs and Newcastle

Jamie Carragher has said that Tottenham Hotspur will make it ‘tough’ for Newcastle United to finish in the top four but he backed the Magpies to clinch the final Champions League spot.

A top-four finish seemed to be slipping away from Spurs’ reach a couple of weeks ago but back-to-back league wins over Fulham and Manchester City have brought the Lilywhites right back into the race.

With Newcastle having drawn four of their last five league games, just a point separates the two sides in the Premier League table, although Eddie Howe’s men have a game in hand.

Tottenham have an opportunity to go above the Magpies, maybe temporarily, with a win at the King Power Stadium before Newcastle travel to the Brentford Community Stadium for the late kick-off on Saturday.

Carragher pointed to Newcastle’s record of having lost just one game this season as evidence that Howe has created ‘something special’ in the North East.

The pundit said on The Overlap: “I think they can [make top 4]. I think Newcastle for me, alongside Arsenal are one of the most exciting teams to watch. When you watch them, it just feels like it’s so fast and energetic.

“They’ve only lost one game and I know they’ve drawn a lot of games but to only lose 1 Premier League game over halfway through a season, no matter who you are, it’s some going that. Premier League games are tough.”

“We know Newcastle are not the best team in the league, they’re in the top 4 right now, so to only lose 1 game is some going. I think how Eddie Howe has got them set-up defensively as well, they don’t look like a soft touch, a typical Newcastle team where it’ll be end to end.

“It would be any type of score. I think Eddie Howe is one of the managers of the season, no doubt. But it’ll be tough for them, Tottenham will be there or thereabouts. But I think Newcastle have got something special going on there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think it is a given yet that the top three spots are sealed, with Newcastle and Spurs battling it out for fourth.

Man Utd could easily be dragged into the race for Champions League qualification while I would also not rule out the prospect of Man City collapsing, given all that has gone on at the Etihad recently.
