Jamie Carragher reveals Liverpool were interested in Spurs player this summer

Tottenham Hotspur rounded off their summer transfer window with the double capture of Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon.

While Tottenham fans were treated to a brief cameo of Lo Celso in the closing minutes of yesterday’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City they are yet to see Sessegnon in action.

The former Fulham player is currently sidelined with a hamstring problem which delayed his first outing in a Spurs shirt.

Sessegnon was in the last year of his contract at Craven Cottage, which saw Spurs land the England Under-21 international for £25million plus Josh Onomah moving in the other direction (BBC).

Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Anfield outfit had the 19-year-old on their radar prior to his move to North London.

According to Carragher, Liverpool viewed Sessegnon as a player for the future rather than one who could come straight into Jurgen Kcpp’s side and make an immediate impact.

In his column for The Telegraph, Carragher said: “This summer they have invested in the squad, but how many of the recruits did Manchester City or Liverpool want? They are the clubs Pochettino is measuring his squad against now. I know Liverpool watched Ryan Sessegnon, and saw another player for the future rather than someone who could go straight into the team at left-back.

“Pochettino is again working with a signing he is expected to develop over time rather than players who can make an immediate impact.”
