Jamie O’Hara enraged by Spurs defender’s poor mistake against Chelsea

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has blasted Jan Vertonghen for his poor defending that led to Olivier Giroud’s opener in Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

Vertonghen hasn’t been playing regular football in the last couple of months, with Jose Mourinho seemingly preferring a centre back partnership of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.

The experienced defender’s contract with Tottenham will run out at the end of the season and recent reports have suggested that the club might not offer him a new deal (Daily Mail).

The Belgian international was handed a rare start against Chelsea as Spurs lined up with five at the back in order to defend deep and soak up pressure.

However, their game plan went out of the window when Olivier Giroud gave the home side the lead in the 15th minute.

Vertonghen appeared to move out of the way of Giroud’s rasping shot which thundered into the net past Hugo Lloris and O’Hara took to social media to blast the centre back’s defending.

I too was quite alarmed by the way he turned his back at the shot but I don’t think Vertonghen had a particularly bad game against Chelsea apart from the first goal. However, it is clear that the 32-year-old has lost half a yard of pace and I don’t expect the club to hand him a new deal after his contract expires.
