Jamie Redknapp urges Spurs to take action over Antonio Conte’s future

Jamie Redknapp has called for Tottenham Hotspur to sort out Antonio Conte’s future at the club.

Conte saw his side fall to a 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United yesterday evening to condemn the north Londoners to a second successive Premier League defeat in the space of five days on the back of losing at Old Trafford.

Redknapp claimed that the Italian cannot use injuries as the sole reason for Tottenham’s poor week.

Spurs have been without the services of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison and they were joined on the sidelines by Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the visit of the Magpies.

The former midfielder suggested that if he was a Tottenham player, he would want to see reassurances that Conte is going to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Redknapp also called for the club to secure Harry Kane’s future with the striker out of contract in the summer of 2024 and insisted that the club have to tie both down on new deals.

He told Sky Sports: “He is talking about the process taking a few years but I think I am right in saying that he has only got until the summer when his contract ends.

“He is a manager who works in short bursts. He goes in somewhere for three years, wins, and then normally he goes somewhere else.

“It is not an easy conversation to have but if we are talking about process, if I am a player there you need to know that he wants to be there and he is part of that process. Normally, a manager of his ilk would be signed up by now.

“We are very close to Christmas, the World Cup, the season can be over very quickly. You need to get him tied up so he can talk about who he wants in.

“You need to get Harry Kane signed up, he has 18 months left on his contract as well. These are really important factors that they have to get right as a club because they can’t have Harry Kane leaving and they certainly can’t have the manager leaving.”

Tottenham’s form over the past week is not ideal timing ahead of the winter break where it is likely that the club will meet with Conte to discuss his future.

The Italian holds all of the power in the talks and will want to seek reassurances from the powers that be that he will receive financial backing over the next three to four windows to continue his overhaul of the squad; if he doesn’t hear what he wants, we all know what the likey outcome will be.
