‘Jan for president’ – Some former Spurs team-mates react to Vertonghen’s Benfica move

Some members of the Tottenham Hotspur squad have been reacting on social media following the announcement that Jan Vertonghen has joined Benfica.

The 33-year-old was reportedly not offered a new contract by Spurs and left as a free agent following the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace last month (Sky Sports).

Former team-mates of the Belgian including Giovani Lo Celso, Lucas Moura, Harry Winks, Davinson Sanchez, Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko all sent their messages of congratulations to Vertonghen who made over 300 appearances in Spurs colours.

Vertonghen was unveiled to the Portuguese media at an event yesterday evening after signing a three-year deal with the Lisbon-based outfit.

Inter Milan, Roma and Lazio were all rumoured to be keen on landing the former Ajax defender, but were pipped to his signature by Benfica (Daily Mail).

Benfica finished second in Liga Nos last season behind Porto and will enter the Champions League at the third qualifying round stage.
