Jan Vertonghen decides to answer questions on Eriksen’s future

Tottenham Hotspur’s Jan Vertonghen has been one of the best and most consistent central defenders in the Premier League for a number of years now.

Many people talk about his partner Toby Alderweireld, or Tottenham’s attacking stars like Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung Min Son, and Christian Eriksen, but Jan is an unsung hero in North London.

I would argue that Vertonghen is one of the best left-footed central defenders in world football, a trait that can be invaluable in a two-man defence.

However, despite both having just one year left on their contracts, it is Christian Eriksen who is being linked to a move away from Spurs this summer.

Eriksen recently revealed to the Danish press that he is ready for a new challenge and a step up next season, after Spurs lost the Champions League final (Ekstra Bladet).

Vertonghen has now unusually addressed questions on his teammate’s future head-on (Sky Sports): “Obviously when the transfer window starts there are a lot rumours, but there were rumours last year and everyone stayed together, so I’m hopeful.

“Christian is a great player. I have known him since he was 16, played with him since he was 16 or 17 [at Ajax] and I hope he’s with Tottenham next season. He’s an exceptional player.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Jan makes a good point that this Spurs squad have remained as a unit through the years despite all the rumours, however, my worry is about timing this summer. If Eriksen wants to leave, I want it done quickly, with money in the bank to replace him before pre-season. I am fearful that it will drag on and on, and we will end up losing him weeks before the season, leaving little time to find a replacement.
