Jan Vertonghen issues statement on expiring contract

With the transfer window finally shut, talk has turned to current stars’ contracts, and whether they will or will not sign new deals.

The likes of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, Harry Winks, Davinson Sanchez and Erik Lamela have all signed new bumper deals this year already, and Spurs fans will be hoping that there are more to follow.

Dele Alli is also expected to sign a new £100,000 a week contract in the coming months.

Contract negotiations between Eriksen and the club have apparently stalled, but Tottenham will be hoping to get that one over the line before the end of the season.

They are also said to be lining up one last ditch effort to get Toby Alderweireld to sign a new deal.

However, one player who has seemingly slipped under the radar is Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian superstar’s contract expires on 30 June 2019, and he has permission to start talking to non-English clubs about a pre-contract in just three months.

Vertonghen had this to say on the matter: “My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year. I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens.”

Fans will be hoping that Spurs extend the centre-backs deal, and sign him up for a number of years beyond.
