Jan Vertonghen opens up on current squad and Toby Alderweireld rumours

Tottenham Hotspur will have some transfer decisions to make this season, with three of their key first-team stars into the final year of their respective contracts.

Christian Eriksen has been Spurs’ chief talisman since arriving from Ajax, and Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have been the beating heart of the Tottenham defence.

Losing any one of them would be a huge blow to the squad, but all three at once would be nothing short of a disaster for Pochettino.

Jan and Toby both had their contracts extended by an extra year in early 2019, keeping them at the club until the summer of 2020 at least (Guardian).

However, new contracts will have to be agreed if the club hopes to keep their star defenders beyond that point.

Having played with Alderweireld for Ajax, Tottenham, and Belgium, it is fair to say that few people know him and his game as well as Vertonghen.

Toby is still a Spurs player for the minute and Jan hopes it will stay that way (Sky Sports): “We just look at ourselves, we want to be in the best shape possible, whoever comes in or goes out that is out of our hands.

“We have got a great squad with great guys and whoever is here is ready to play for Spurs.

“You never know but I have played for so many years with Toby, he is a very good player and a great guy for the group.

“Like I said it is out of my hands but he is here now and I am happy with that.”
