Jan Vertonghen opens up on disappointment after being left out at start of season

Tottenham Hotspur have been blessed with one of the very best defensive partnerships in the Premier League, if not world football, in recent years.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld seem like the perfect pair, having played alongside each other in three separate teams at Spurs, Belgium, and Ajax. Jan being left-footed and Toby preferring his right is yet another bonus to their partnership.

However, the dynamic duo were split up for the first few matches of the season, with Vertonghen not even making the travelling squad for the opening day.

Davinson Sanchez was given the nod ahead of the experienced Vertonghen by Mauricio Pochettino for the first few matches, but the Belgian has been a regular in the starting XI ever since.

He has now revealed his disappointment at not starting every match, but believes that is just a sign of his ambition. However, he does admit that a couple of his games this season have been below par.

Jan said (Football London): “I didn’t play the first three games. That’s a decision because we can only have 11 on the pitch and 7 on the bench. I want to play every game and in that way, I was disappointed. I think that shows I’m still ambitious and I want to play every game.

“My performances this season, a couple of good ones and a couple that could have been better. That’s why we train every day to reach a higher level.”
