Jan Vertonghen opens up on the chance to play his boyhood club Ajax

Tottenham Hotspur have qualified for their first ever Champions League semi-final, after beating Man City on away goals over two legs.

Spurs left it late against the Citizens, and survived a 92nd minute VAR scare, but they booked their deserved place in the final four.

Despite this being an incredible achievement for the club, perhaps an even more surprising name in the semi finals is Dutch side, Ajax.

Ajax have already knocked out Real Madrid and Juventus in this year’s competition, and Spurs will have to be weary of the underrated opposition.

However, this draw comes with even more importance for Tottenham once you realise the link between the two famous sides.

Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, and Christian Eriksen all spent their younger years at Ajax before joining Spurs.

Vertonghen has now opened up on his love for the club that developed him, and how much he is looking forward to playing them.

He said (inews): “I will sit down in the coach and read my texts and probably the applications for tickets and I will realise how big this game is.

“Obviously it’s crazy that they’re there, an even bigger surprise that Ajax is there than us probably. I follow them every game, I speak to the people at the club, I know how good they are, I’ve watched every game. At the beginning in the Champions League they surprised everyone but now it’s not a surprise any more. They are of this level, they are Champions League semi-final quality. That’s how it is. It will be an unbelievable battle between two positive sides. I know how good they are, because obviously knocking Real Madrid and Juventus out is crazy.”
