Jan Vertonghen responds to question about his contract situation at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a huge Champions League tie against Bayern Munich tomorrow night at the new White Hart Lane as they look to build on their Southampton victory at the weekend.

Jan Vertonghen was speaking to the press with Pochettino this afternoon ahead of the European encounter, and he was unsurprisingly asked about his contract situation.

Jan has under a year left on his current deal at Spurs, meaning that he could talk to non-English clubs in January about a free move in the summer.

However, Spurs could, in theory, offer the Belgian a new contract between now and then, with the centre-back claiming that he still feels young and has a few years left at the top.

Vertonghen, 32, was left out of the first few matches this season but has been a regular in the starting XI ever since.

He revealed that there ‘is always movement’ in new contract talks, but did not want to go into detail.

Jan said (Football London): “I’d prefer not to go into that but there is always movement there of course.

“It’s not a distraction. I’m very aware of my age. I feel fairly young. It doesn’t distract me. I want to play as many games as possible. I’m very ambitious and I feel I’ve got a few good years left at the top level.

“It’s my eighth season and I’m feeling great. Maybe the results didn’t come our way but they were tough away games and you always have to see how you bounce back from that.”
