Japhet Tanganga outlines Tottenham’s trophy ambition for next season

Japhet Tanganga has admitted that the Tottenham players are determined to ensure that they do not end next season without silverware and revealed their intention to go all the way in the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho declared his intention to win the Europa League next season before Tottenham even managed to qualify for the competition.

Spurs eventually were able to seal a place in Europe when they leapfrogged Wolves into sixth place on the final day of the season after Nuno Espirito Santo’s men suffered a defeat against Chelsea.

However, Arsenal’s subsequent win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final meant that the Lilywhites will have to navigate through three qualification rounds to book their place in the group stage of the competition.

Mourinho’s men face a long and hard road to the final and need to play 18 matches if they are to make it to the last two of the competition (Football.London).

However, Tanganga is pretty bullish about the team’s chances of lifting the trophy.

He told talkSPORT: “We want to do better than we did this season. Getting Europa League gives us another opportunity to win a competition.

“It’s another opportunity to get silverware and we want to end next season with a trophy.”

Meanwhile, Oliver Skipp, who has joined Norwich on a season-long loan, also backed the Spurs boss to win the competition for a third time next season after his previous triumphs with Porto and Manchester United.

Skipp said: “Mourinho has won it twice out of two attempts I believe he’ll be looking to keep that record going.

“It’s been a while since we won some silverware so we have to go in with the attitude that we’re in the competition to win it.”

Given the crazy number of matches we could end up playing next season if we go all the way in the Europa League, it is vital that we strengthen the squad significantly this summer. We need a bigger squad to ensure that we are better prepared in case we face another injury crisis next season.
