Jenas reveals two former Spurs stars had naked scrap in the showers

Jermaine Jenas has revealed that Rafael Van der Vaart and Benoit Assou-Ekotto once had an altercation in the shower after a match.

The Tottenham team under Harry Redknapp certainly had its fair share of characters, with Van der Vaart and Assou-Ekotto being among them.

Both were popular among Spurs fans for different reasons – Assou-Ekotto for his eccentricity, and Van der Vaart for wearing his heart on his sleeve from the day he arrived at the club, and always turning up in North London derbies.

While talking about instances where his teammates have had a disagreement, Jenas narrated an incident about the aforementioned pair coming to blows in the shower after a game.

The former Spurs midfielder revealed that the tension between Van der Vaart and Assou-Ekotto arose from a disagreement regarding a free kick during the match.

The pundit divulged that other players stepped in to separate the pair before things got ugly.

Jenas said on the Stripped podcast with Specs & Vuj (as relayed by The Daily Star): “There was a moment at Tottenham when Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Rafael van der Vaart both wanted to take a free-kick.

“Rafa wanted to take the free-kick, but Benoit wasn’t having any of it and so when Benoit was ready to take it, Rafa just came up and took it on the sly!

“We get in, everyone is getting changed and then suddenly I hear this commotion in the showers.

“It’s Rafa and Benoit going at it, naked! It got stopped pretty much immediately but it just shows that these things happen a lot, just not on the pitch.”

These kinds of altercations between teammates are likely much more common than fans tend to think. That is understandable as temperatures tend to run high, especially given what is at stake.

This incident is also perhaps proof that despite claiming not to like football (Guardian), Assou-Ekotto very much cared about doing well and getting good results for Spurs.
