Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has highlighted Dominic Solanke’s struggles and impact for Spurs since he joined this season.
Filling the boots of Harry Kane is no easy task. Yet, in their bid to replace their all-time top scorer, Tottenham turned to one of Bournemouth’s standout players last season—Dominic Solanke.
In his final campaign for the Cherries before making the switch to Spurs, Solanke was among the Premier League’s most prolific forwards, netting 19 goals—two more than Tottenham’s own top scorer, Heung-min Son.
His form made him one of the division’s most in-demand strikers, and Spurs were convinced he was the right man to lead the line.

Jermain Defoe says Dominic Solanke brings energy to Tottenham
Since arriving in north London, his time at Spurs has been a mixed bag. He has not hit the same goal-scoring heights as he did last season, managing just seven goals in 19 appearances so far.
For a team that lost Kane’s record-breaking output, the expectation was always going to be high.
However, Solanke’s game is not solely about scoring goals, and Jermain Defoe has underlined exactly why the number nine remains such an important figure for Tottenham.
Speaking to Squawka, Defoe said: “I think he is more than just a goalscorer as well. The energy that he brings and how the team want to play.
“And then I think he has shown people, he has shut a lot of people up with the goals that he has scored. Big goals as well, some top finishes.
“Got into the England squad. It is just unfortunate that he has got the injury. But hopefully, he is back soon and he finishes the season strong.”
Solanke’s impact and room for improvement
There is no doubt that injuries have slowed his progress. Even so, his presence in the team extends beyond just putting the ball in the net. His link-up play, movement, and work rate make him a crucial part of Ange Postecoglou’s system.
That said, Spurs need more goals. Kane was not just a ruthless finisher; he was also a playmaker, bringing others into the game with his vision and creativity.
If Solanke could add another ten goals to his current tally, it would provide a huge boost for Tottenham and ease the burden on Son and the supporting cast.
The English forward has since returned from injury. His main focus now would be on finishing the season strong.
