Jermain Defoe talks Gareth Bale return and wants to play against Spurs this season

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe is pleased to see Gareth Bale return to Spurs and admitted that he would love it if Rangers were drawn against them in Europe this season.

There is plenty of excitement around Tottenham at the moment owing to the romance involved in Bale’s return, with some Spurs fans salivating at the prospect of seeing a front three of the Welshman, Son Heung-min, and Harry Kane.

Defoe revealed that he hopes the returning superstar can recapture his best form for the Lilywhites and find happiness again.

When asked about his former Tottenham teammate’s return to North London, the striker told The Daily Record: “It is sort of like a fairytale story with him coming back to Tottenham.

“He was linked with all those other teams, as you could imagine because he is a top player, so to see it happen now is amazing.

“I hope he goes and does well. The attacking options that Mourinho has now look frightening, to be honest. I just want to wish him all the best.

“It has been difficult for him. I know Gareth as a person. He is a nice guy, a family man and a top player.

“All he has to do now is play football and be happy. That is when we are at our happiest – when we’re playing.”

Rangers and Spurs were kept apart in the Europa League draw but Defoe admitted that he would have relished the prospect of a tie against his former side.

The striker was quite confident that the Scottish giants can go toe-to-toe with teams like Spurs in the latter stages of the competition.

Defoe added: “For me, playing against Tottenham, would be special and emotional.

“At the same time, I look at our squad and think: ‘You know what? We could actually go there and compete.

“I think we showed that during the last campaign in Europe. You are playing against these top teams and top managers and actually competing and doing well. You never know.

“You look at a lot of the players in the team and the European campaign last season and that brings confidence. We know that we can match these teams physically.”
