Joao Palhinha sets record straight about taking his shirt off after Tottenham equaliser

Joao Palhinha has given an interesting response to the outcry on social media over him celebrating a late Tottenham equaliser against cellar dwellers Wolves.

Tottenham were massive favourites to overcome Wolves at home, but the Lilywhites delivered a forgettable display on Saturday.

In the end, they needed a stoppage-time curler from Joao Palhinha to avoid a second home loss of the season.

Even Thomas Frank acknowledged that his side struggled offensively once again, admitting that they have not yet found a way to consistently create chances.

Joao Palhinha defends his Tottenham goal celebration against Wolves

What made many Spurs fans irate was seeing Palhinha take his shirt off and run to the corner flag to celebrate the equaliser jubilantly.

Many felt that the players should have just got the ball back to the centre circle as quickly as possible in an effort to get a winner in the couple of minutes that were left.

However, the Portugal international has now refused to apologise, insisting that he will always celebrate every moment of success.

Palhinha wrote on Instagram: “About yesterday, a draw at home which clearly wasn’t the result we all wanted, but perhaps it was the fair one. Sometimes these games lead us to a different kind of reflection than a simple victory. Amidst all this, there’s one thing I’m certain of, this team is motivated and strong enough to give a response together!

“Finally, I want to say that I will celebrate every moment of success as if it were the first one ! The emotion, and above all the passion, will always make me live this moments intensely as I always have! Thanks for the support COYS. A special dedication yesterday to one of my 💫 dear grandmother on her birthday.”

Why Palhinha was justified in celebrating his equaliser

The Premier League is tighter than it has ever been, with all teams boasting of some excellent players, and no result is guaranteed.

In this context, every point is crucial, and it was vital for the team’s morale not to lose against Wolves.

The equaliser was thus huge in the context of keeping up the momentum, especially at the start of the Frank era. In that context, it is completely understandable that Palhinha celebrated in the way he did.
