There has been a new update on Joao Palhinha’s future as Sporting Lisbon push to beat Tottenham to the midfielder’s signing.

Despite Roberto De Zerbi declaring he wants Palhinha to remain at Tottenham next season, the Lilywhites may end up missing out on the midfielder.

This is because Sporting Lisbon are accelerating efforts to re-sign their academy graduate this summer, with some sources suggesting that Palhinha could return to Lisbon for personal reasons.

In fact, it has emerged over recent days that Spurs have begun identifying alternative central midfield targets amid fears that they will not be able to seal the permanent signing of the 30-year-old.

Joao Palhinha is willing to lower his salary to join Sporting Lisbon over Tottenham

Sport Witness has now relayed the latest information reported by A Bola and Correio da Manha regarding Palhinha, and it is bad news for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

It is revealed that the Portuguese side are shaping their midfield plans around the expectation that their former player will arrive this summer.

Sporting have begun work to land Palhinha and another number six as they look to rebuild their midfield, with an initial loan deal with an option to buy the most realistic formula for the club.

In fact, it is asserted that the Bayern Munich-owned player is even willing to lower his salary demands to facilitate a return to the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

Palhinha has not spoken to Spurs about his future yet

These latest updates suggest that Palhinha does not want to openly discuss his future at Tottenham Hotspur or leaving the club until the Lilywhites’ survival is secure.

The midfielder feels that it would be unfair to create unnecessary stability at a time when the club’s Premier League status is on the line.

However, Palhinha’s representatives have begun talks in the hope of laying out possible transfer scenarios ahead of the summer window.
