Joe Rodon’s Swansea teammate opens up on defender’s future amidst Spurs interest

Joe Rodon’s Swansea and Wales international teammate, Connor Roberts has admitted that he is desperate for the central defender to stay in South Wales amidst rumours of interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Several reports emerged on transfer deadline day that Spurs had set their sights on Rodon after seeing moves for Milan Skriniar and Antonio Riudger fall through.

Sky Sports claimed on Monday that the Lilywhites were close to agreeing on a deal for the central defender but Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has since revealed that Spurs are likely to take their time since the EFL domestic deadline is not until October 16.

Roberts, who like Rodon, came through the ranks at Swansea, admitted that he was with the 22-year-old on deadline day.

The right-back told BBC Sport: “Ever since he came into the Swansea and Wales set-up, he has been touted about.

“I don’t want him to go anywhere. “I was with him on deadline day [Monday] and chilling with him. I was asking what the crack is.

“At the moment he was just thinking about the next game we are playing England for Wales on Thursday and that is all that is in his head.”

Roberts insisted that, despite the rumours linking him to Spurs, the centre-back was fully focussed on his task at hand but he did hint that Rodon could be on his way out of the club before October 16.

He added: “I told him to put it to the back of his mind. I wouldn’t say it affects him too much, he is a good player.

“I have known him since he was a kid and he is a great lad.

“If in the weeks to come or months he decides to go or gets a chance to go then fair enough.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Reading between the lines of what Roberts is saying, he seems to confirm that Spurs are genuinely interested in Rodon and that the centre-half does have his head turned by the interest. However, I would not surprised if the negotiations between Spurs and Swansea drag on until October 16 as we are in no hurry to bring him into the squad and the two clubs seem to be quite far apart in their valuations of the defender.
