Johan Lange explains how he goes about identifying young talent for Tottenham

Johan Lange has explained there is a lot of emphasis that Tottenham put on the personalities of potential targets, revealing that Ange Postecoglou has been very clear in terms of the kind of players he wants to add to the Tottenham dressing room.

Tottenham’s recruitment had been a bit hit-and-miss for a few years but almost all of the club’s signings over the last couple of windows have hit the ground running.

The likes of Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie and others have settled in seamlessly into their new surroundings at Hotspur Way and the club will be hoping that that the same happens with the likes of Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner.

Johan Lange only wants to sign the right kind of youngsters

Spurs have also favoured the signings of young, up-and-coming players rather than established stars since Postecoglou arrived through the door, and Lange has now explained that the Australian is very specific on the kind of targets he wants, thus leaving him in no doubt about the type of qualities to look for.

Tottenham’s technical director has now told the club’s official channel: “It is very important when we are out there watching potential new players that they fit stylistically with the style of play but also with the personality and group that we want to build here.

“We are fortunate to have a head coach in Ange [Postecoglou] who is crystal clear in how he wants to play, how he wants to train, which kind of personalities he is looking for to build a squad here as well.

“So when the scouting team or myself are out watching players, we know exactly what we are looking for. We are completely aligned as a club in how we want to build the squad over the coming years which is hugely important but is not only about Ange or myself, this is a club strategy, a club alignment and Ange and I have been brought in within different roles to execute this.”

When asked why it is so important to get the right personalities through the door, the Dane responded: “When you are coming in at an early age and an early stage in your career, having the right mindset and personality to keep developing because going through to the Premier League is a massive step.

“We all know that it will be a rainy day or two along the way and that instance is very important to have the personality to overcome those challenges and to all the time learn and prove at all times high standards for yourself and your teammates.”

Apart from the reasons outlined by Lange, it is also quite clear that Postecoglou puts a lot of emphasis on having a harmonious dressing room and building a squad which has a real family feel.

That would not be possible if you have a couple of players in the squad who are selfish and or have an inflated ego, which is why the club seemingly put as much emphasis on the personality of their transfer targets as they do on their ability and tactical fit.
