John Arne Riise thinks ‘unbelievable’ star should have ended up a bigger club than Spurs

John Arne Riise has called former Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele the best player he has seen when it came to his ability on the ball.

The former Liverpool defender played alongside Dembele during his time at Fulham before the Belgian completed a switch to Spurs in 2012.

He became a fan favourite in North London with his technical ability and strength, making him an integral piece of the Spurs midfield.

However, Dembele was not without injuries which hindered his six-and-a-half-year spell before he was offloaded to Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F in January 2019.

And Riise, despite playing with a plethora of top names over a stellar career, has called Dembele the best player he has come across due to his play in possession.

He told the Filthy Fellas podcast: “How he didn’t end up at, I mean Spurs is a big team, but [how he didn’t end up at a bigger team].

“Oh my God, with the ball, his strength and his vision.

“Oh my goodness. He is the best player I have seen when it comes to what he can do with the ball. His touch. You couldn’t get the ball off him.

“Everybody says that in every club. He was unbelievable. He comes to training and he is so chilled, like he is on the pitch and relaxed. It doesn’t look like he cares.

“But when the ball is there, oh my God. He was so strong as well.”

Spurs Web Opinion

A lot of players lean towards picking Dembele as one of the best players they have come across and it isn’t surprising given how good he was on the ball.

His strength and immaculate dribbling made him such a tough player to come up against and it was a shame that injuries hindered him to the point where he needed to be offloaded.
