John Terry issues warning to Harry Kane over England starting place

John Terry has said that Gareth Southgate will have to send the likes of Harry Kane a message that they will be dropped from his England side if they are not playing well.

The Three Lions topped group B with seven points, scoring nine goals and conceding just two in their three matches but their captain is yet to get on the scoresheet in Qatar.

The 29-year-old, who won the Golden Boot in Russia in 2018, has instead been the Three Lions’ main provider this World Cup, having delivered three assists in the group stage.

However, the Tottenham man has come in for criticism from some pundits as a result of his performances, with Tony Adams insisting after the 0-0 draw against the USA that he would love playing against Kane since he does not occupy the defence since he does not look to run in behind them (The Sun).

Following England’s 3-0 win over Wales, Gary Neville even suggested that the England captain is not 100 per cent fit and that he is playing through an injury (Gary Neville Podcast).

Terry has now become the latest ex-England player to question Kane’s place in the side, stating that Marcus Rashford could start in the Spurs star’s place if he does not perform well.

The former Chelsea captain told beIN SPORTS – 30/11/22 at 9:15 pm: “It now causes the manager problems. It will now be interesting to see his next team and the line-up when we play Senegal because the players have given the manager a problem.

“When you have such a good group of players, it’s important to know that Harry Kane, if you’re not playing well, then there other players that can come in. Rashford can come and replace you.

“If Mason Mount isn’t playing well, then you will be replaced. When you have that competitiveness within the group, it’s also great as well because these players now feel part of it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Realistically, there is no chance that Southgate will drop Kane as the England boss knows the striker’s importance to the side. The Tottenham man will certainly not let these comments bother him as he is more than used to getting criticised and proving people wrong over the course of his career.
