Jose Enrique claims he would still take Liverpool player over Spurs’ Kulusevski

Despite the start Dejan Kulusevski has made to his Tottenham career, Jose Enrique has insisted he would still rather have Luis Diaz over the Spurs winger.

It looked as though Spurs were set to snap up Diaz from Porto in January (The Guardian) but it was Liverpool who ended up winning the race for the 25-year-old.

According to reports, Tottenham had agreed on a transfer fee with Porto for the wide man before the Reds swooped in to steal the Colombian from under Spurs’ noses (The Athletic).

Spurs subsequently snapped up Kulusevski from Juventus on transfer deadline day and, despite the signing not being met with great excitement at the time, the Swede has made an instant impact in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old already has seven-goal contributions to his name in just 10 league games so far (Transfermarkt) and Tottenham fans will be hoping there is a lot more to come from the wide-man.

However, Enrique insisted he would still rather have Diaz than Kulusevski. The former Liverpool left-back said on his Instagram story (04/04/22): “Who has been the better signing this January – Luis Diaz or Dejan Kulusevski?

“Dejan in 2022 is the player with the most assists in the Premier League – 5 but even with that data, I will take Luis Diaz for the way he plays and what he brings to the team.”

At this point, Diaz is the more proven player out of the two, which is why Spurs prioritised a move for the Colombian over Kulusevski. However, the former Juventus man has age on his side and he could develop into a world-class attacker within the next few years.
