Jose Mourinho answers question on why Eric Dier is not making starting line-ups

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Eric Dier, was one of Jose Mourinho’s favourites when the Special One first came on as head coach in North London.

Dier played 90 minutes in four of the first Premier League games under Jose Mourinho, appearing in six of the first seven. He also featured in both Champions League fixtures under Mourinho (Transfer Markt).

With the recent injuries to Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele, it would have seemed as if Dier’s chances of more game time would have increased, but that has not been the case.

Dier has not featured in the Premier League since playing 14 minutes against Brighton on Boxing Day last year, even dropping out of the squad completely on New Years Day (Transfer Markt).

Harry Winks has become the new favoured man in holding midfield, with Spurs also signing Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica.

On Dier’s recent omissions, Jose Mourinho claimed that only eleven players could start.

Charlie Eccleshare reports that Mourinho said: “Only 11 can play. I had questions about Winks when he was not playing, and now your question is about Eric. People focus on the one that is not playing. Good squads, competitive squads – they have this problem all over the place.”
