Jose Mourinho claims Spurs star should be playing for ‘the best teams’ in the world

Jose Mourinho has risked the ire of Tottenham fans by suggesting that Son Heung-min should be playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world and winning titles regularly.

Son has been incredibly consistent since arriving at Tottenham back in 2015, regularly registering over 20 goal contributions season in, and season out.

The Tottenham captain’s record in the Premier League is quite astounding, with the forward having scored 120 times and provided 61 assists in 300 matches in the English top flight (Transfermarkt).

The 31-year-old has now breached the top five in Spurs’ all-time goalscoring charts and is likely to end up a few places higher if he continues at the club for a couple of more years.

However, Son perhaps does not get the respect he deserves from some quarters, with Ange Postecoglou telling Football.London last month that the forward would be recognised as one of the biggest superstars of the game if he had a different nationality.

Mourinho says Son could play for bigger teams than Spurs

Mourinho too has now heaped praise on the Tottenham man, describing him as one of the best in the world.

The former Spurs head coach told EA Sports FC (as relayed by The Metro): “I don’t look at Son as a Korean player. I look at Son as one of the best players in the world, Maybe Tottenham supporters aren’t going to be happy with what I’m going to say, it’s not disrespectful. He could win titles, he could play for the best teams.

“He could be playing in England for Man City, for Liverpool, for Chelsea. It could be abroad, playing for one of the top teams. He has that modern mobility of the attacking players. He can play through the middle, from the sides, wide to coming inside.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that most top sides in world football would want Son if he became available. However, the forward is incredibly loyal and is from a rare breed of modern-day footballers, who genuinely seem to have a special connection with their club.
