Tottenham Hotspur central defender, Jan Vertonghen, is currently one of the longest-serving players within the senior Spurs squad, but will he be at the club next season?
The Belgian’s current contract runs out at the end of this campaign, meaning he is set to leave on a free transfer away from North London.
Now that we are in the new year, Vertonghen can talk to non-English clubs about a potential pre-contract ahead of such a free transfer.
However, in the past, Vertonghen has claimed that he wants to sign a new contract with Tottenham and remain at the club. Asked more recently and Vertonghen was certainly vague on the details, but insisted he was happy (Standard).
Jose Mourinho was asked about Vertonghen’s contract situation today, to which he said that the player, club, and agent all have to agree, but let us see what happens. This one could run and run by the sounds of it.
Charlie Eccleshare reports that Mourinho said:
Vertonghen close to a new deal? I told you when I arrived we had three players in situation of ending contract, and the one that was easy to resolve was where everybody wanted the same. The player, the agent, the club. Let’s see what happens.
