Jose Mourinho comments on new Alderweireld contract and whether he had influence

Tottenham Hotspur head coach, Jose Mourinho, believes he had very little influence on Toby Alderweireld signing a new contract with the club today.

This comes as the Belgian defender put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at the club until at least 2023.

Alderweireld has been a mainstay in the defence ever since he joined from Atletico Madrid back in 2015 and has started every match under Mourinho so far.

Perhaps the timing of the contract is a coincidence, or perhaps the sacking of Pochettino and hiring of Mourinho had something to do with it, we will likely never know.

However, securing the services of one of the best defenders in the Premier League can only be a good thing for Tottenham, as well as avoiding losing a prized asset on a free.

Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen are still due to leave the club on their own free transfers in the summer if more deals are not agreed.

Mourinho had this to say on Toby’s contract and whether he had any influence: “I believe little. When I read his comments what jumped out was he couldn’t see himself happy in another place. The only bit of influence I had is he knows my belief in him. He has played every minute of every match.”
