Jose Mourinho goes off on rant about media treatment of Harry Kane incident

Harry Kane made the headlines this week after winning a penalty against Brighton in the Premier League, courtesy of some help from VAR.

The England captain, standing on the edge of the box, looked to put his body between the ball and Adam Lallana, enticing the aerial challenge from the Brighton man.

When Lallana, who had his eyes firmly on the ball, clattered into the back of Kane, the Spurs man hit the deck and it was eventually deemed to be on the line of the box.

Kane dispatched the penalty with ease and Tottenham went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to a Gareth Bale header off the bench.

However, Kane’s penalty antics made plenty of headlines and got many people talking over the week, with some even labelling the Tottenham striker as a cheat.

Jose Mourinho went off on a long rant in his press conference today about the incident, claiming that Lallana simply fouled Kane.

He said (Football London): “Harry Kane was in a position to control the ball and Lallana came in a reckless fashion. Why are you saying it is clever? Clever is taking the ball and scoring a goal. It’s a foul. I thought it was a direct free-kick but VAR said it was inside the box because it was on the line. What are we talking about being clever? Harry Kane just wants to score goals. Lallana was reckless. Why are you speaking about us? Speak about Liverpool, Manchester United, City and others with ‘clever’ players and getting penalties. Don’t speak about Harry Kane.”
