Jose Mourinho makes bold statement about Spurs’ Premier League ambitions

New Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho completed his first Spurs press conference yesterday afternoon since taking the job and he appeared to be extremely pleased to have taken over the helm at North London.

The Portuguese manager kept reiterating how happy he was to work with the squad of players currently at the club.

However, arguably the most eye-catching moment of the entire half hour was when the 56-year-old was asked if Spurs will the Premier League under his stewardship.

Mourinho confidently suggested that the club could realistically hope to win the title next season.

As quoted by Football.London, the new Spurs manager said: “We can’t win the Premier League this season. Next season, I’m not saying we will win it, but we can win it.”

While Spurs came close to winning the Premier League title on a couple of occasions during Pochettino’s reign, they never managed to quite get over the line.

They have seemingly fallen a long way since then but Mourinho’s words will give Spurs fans confidence that perhaps the club could make that final step and win silverware.

While I wasn’t a huge fan of Mourinho’s appointment, perhaps this is the sort of mentality the club now requires in order to finally take that next step. However, given the level Manchester City and Liverpool are at present, Mourinho has got his work cut out if he hopes to get Tottenham near the same level.
