Tottenham Hotspur now find themselves with a realistic chance of reaching the Champions League final in Madrid, after overcoming Manchester City in the quarter final .
Spurs will now go up against Ajax in the final four, while Liverpool and Barcelona will be competing for the other place in the final.
While Ajax and Spurs both have a great history in European competitions, their exploits in recent decades don’t match that of either Liverpool or Barcelona.
While Liverpool reached the Champions League final last season as well, Barcelona despite under-performing in recent seasons, have won the competition three times in the last decade.
However former Manchester United and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that he wouldn’t be surprised if either Ajax or Spurs went on to win the competition.
The 56-year-old said that mere luck cannot get a team to the final four of the competition and that their progression to this stage clearly indicates that a team is capable of beating anyone.
According to the Metro, Mourinho told Russia Today, “I always used to say this, when you get into the quarter-final you are there for some reason.

“The group phase, sometimes you are a little bit lucky, sometimes your opponent was not as good as expected, sometimes you are lucky in the last 16 draw.
“But when you get into the quarter-finals, in a very respectful way, I always say 12.5% for each one.
“When you get to the semi-finals, it’s even more, 25% each one. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ajax or Tottenham win the Champions League.”
“Okay, maybe I’d be a little bit surprised, but I wouldn’t be in shock in this moment, because they are in the semi-finals and one of them will go to the final and the final is a final, it’s one game. It’s 90 minutes, it’s the game of a career for the majority of the people.”
