Jose Mourinho opens up on potential new contract for Heung-min Son amidst reports

Jose Mourinho has hinted that he expects Son Heung-min to sign a new contract with Tottenham and revealed that there is a willingness from both the club and the player to extend his stay.

It was reported earlier in the week that Spurs were close to agreeing a new deal with the South Korean (Athletic).

It was claimed that the new contract will see the 28-year-old move closer to the club’s highest earners and that Spurs were keen to reward him for his improved run of form.

Son currently sits at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts along with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He is also showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, with the 28-year-old finding the back of the net against LASK yesterday after coming on as a late substitute.

Speaking after the 3-0 win over the Austrian side, Mourinho was asked about whether Son was about to sign a new deal (via Daily Mail): “I would love that.

“Son has three years of contract. So it’s not like we’re in an extreme situation of everybody being worried.

“It’s more that Son loves it here, I believe that he would like to commit his future to the club for a long time.

“Everybody at the club is totally in love with this player and this boy and is trying also to make him feel part of the furniture.

“It’s normal the club tries to go from three years to four or five or six, I don’t know.

“He deserves one, and the club knows that sooner or later without any pressure they will arrive into a decision.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Mourinho’s words are very promising and suggest that Son is likely to soon put pen to paper. Kane’s deal runs until 2024 but I can see the club offering him an extension soon. If both players commit themselves, we will have one of the best strike forces in Europe for the next 4 to 5 years at least. I cannot see how we will not win plenty of silverware with those two up front, particularly given how well the ‘rebuild’ seems to be going under Jose.
