Jose Mourinho reveals defender is expected to miss the next three matches

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed on social media that Jose Mourinho does not expect Serge Aurier to be available for the next three matches.

Aurier hit the headlines for the wrong reasons a couple of weeks ago after it was reported that the right-back had a falling out with Mourinho and left the stadium at half-time of Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool.

It was suggested that the Ivorian’s Spurs career was under-threat on the back of that incident but Mourinho has reintegrated him back into the squad, with Aurier starting Tottenham’s 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

However, the former Paris Saint-Germain defender was unavailable for the Tottenham’s trip to the Etihad on Saturday due to an injury, with Mourinho choosing to start Japhet Tanganga over Matt Doherty.

The Spurs boss revealed in his press conference earlier this afternoon that Sergio Reguilon will not make the trip to Budapest for the first leg of the Europa League tie against Wolfsberger but that he could be back within a week’s time.

However, Gold has now confirmed that the Spurs boss did not have positive news regarding Aurier while Giovani Lo Celso remains out.

A silver-lining with the Aurier injury news is that it might give Doherty a run of three or four games in a row to help him rebuild his confidence. However, some Spurs fans might be dreading that prospect due to the former Wolves man’s struggles so far this season.

Tanganga might also feel that he deserves more opportunities at right-back on the back of his performance on Saturday. However, I believe the 21-year-old does not offer enough going forward and is primarily more suited to playing as a full-back against the bigger sides when we have to do a lot more defending. I would rather see Tanganga given opportunities at centre-back.
