Jose Mourinho has admitted that he cannot wait to get started as AS Roma boss after the Serie A club officially confirmed that the former Tottenham boss will take over from Paulo Fonseca at the end of the season.
Although the timing of Mourinho’s sacking at Spurs came as a surprise to many, the writing appeared to be on the wall for the 58-year-old in light of the team’s struggles over the last few months.
Mourinho declared soon after his sacking that he did not need a break and it was reported that he had already turned down an approach from Celtic.
Roma, who were on the lookout for a new boss to replace Fonseca, today confirmed that they had reached an agreement with former Tottenham head coach.
Mourinho will be returning to Serie A eleven years after his stint at Inter Milan, where he won a historic treble in 2010-11.
After being confirmed as the new Roma head coach, he told the Serie A club’s official website: “Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision.
“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma.
“It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.
“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.
“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”
