Jose Mourinho has singled out Eric Dier for praise for his performance in Tottenham’s Carabao Cup win over Chelsea on Tuesday.
The defender was at the centre of a controversy on Sunday after being adjudged to have handled the ball against Newcastle and few would have expected him to start on Tuesday after his exertions against the Magpies.
However, Mourinho partnered Dier with Toby Alderwiereld and Japhet Tanganga in a back three, with the England international hardly putting a foot wrong through the ninety minutes.
He marshalled the backline extremely well and also stepped up to take Tottenham’s first spot-kick in the penalty shootout, dispatching it with ease.
The 26-year-old took home the Man of the Match award for his display as he helped the Lilywhites to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Mourinho took to social media to lavish praise at Dier for completing over 180 minutes of football in 48 hours.
Spurs Web Opinion
Dier does not get the respect he deserves from parts of the Tottenham fan base. He is clearly our best defender and our leader at the back. He is only going to get better and better with more games under his belt as he continues to readjust to the centre-back role.
