Jose Mourinho will please plenty of Spurs fans with his FA Cup aims this season

Tottenham Hotspur take on Middlesbrough tomorrow afternoon in the FA Cup as they look to kickstart their domestic cup campaign.

The Carabao Cup ended in swift despair for Spurs this season as they were embarrassingly knocked out by the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, Colchester United.

With Tottenham over 25 points behind Liverpool in the League and up against the best teams in Europe in the Champions League, the FA Cup may well be the best chance for a trophy.

Who better to lead Spurs to their first piece of silverware in 12 years than Jose Mourinho, a man who has won the FA Cup before?

One accusation that was always levelled at Pochettino during his time in charge by some Spurs fans was not taking the domestic cups seriously enough.

While Mourinho did not claim that Spurs would win it, he did assure fans that the competition should be taken seriously, which will be music to the ears of many.

He said (Independent): “I am not saying we are candidates, I am not saying we are going to win it, but I am saying we have to play this competition seriously.

“You can tell me, ‘Jose you are in trouble, you have lots of injuries and not many options, and you have a Premier League to try to finish in the top six or fourth.

“But I am not going to give more attention to the Premier League than the cup.

“For me, a competition is a competition, a match is a match and again the FA Cup is a special cup. I don’t see it in another way.

“If Middlesbrough beat us they beat us because they were very good or because we were bad. Or because we were not good enough but not because the Tottenham coach didn’t give to the cup the responsibility, not at all, no chance.”
