Journalist argues Spurs ‘have to test the water’ for PL star in January

Journalist Dean Jones believes that Tottenham have to test the water with an offer for James Maddison in January if the Leicester midfielder decides that he wants a new challenge.

Despite the Foxes’ struggles this season, Maddison has been in exemplary form, having registered 10 goal contributions in 12 Premier League games so far this season (Transfermarkt).

His impressive showing this campaign was rewarded by a call-up to the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Reports over recent months have mooted the 25-year-old as a target for Spurs, with Alasdair Gold saying on his YouTube channel back in August that the attacking midfielder is a player some at the North London club admire.

Football Insider even claimed back in September that Maddison would ‘jump at the chance’ to join Tottenham if the club came in for him.

Jones believes that the Foxes star is ready to make a step up and urged Antonio Conte’s men not to pass up on the chance to sign him.

When asked about Spurs’ pursuit of Maddison, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “If it does look like Maddison’s available, or even tempted to make a transfer, I think you have to test the water at this stage.

“You hear him give interviews at the moment, and he is very ambitious, and he’s very driven, and he really believes in himself. And he obviously does want to take that next step in the reasonably near future.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given Leicester’s financial situation and the fact that Maddison’s current deal runs out in 2024, I believe that the Foxes will not turn down a decent offer for the attacking midfielder in January.

However, the 25-year-old does not naturally fit into Antonio Conte’s system and would only be a bit-part player unless there are injuries, which is why I suspect Spurs could pursue other options instead.
