Journalist asks Mourinho what the current situation is with Davinson Sanchez at Spurs

Jose Mourinho was asked about the current situation surrounding Davinson Sanchez in his press conference yestersday, with one journalist questioning why the defender is playing some matches but not others.

The Spurs head coach claimed that the situation was the same for all of his central defenders, adding that no one is playing every game or missing every game.

Mourinho opted for a back two of Toby Alderweireld and Joe Rodon against Marine in the FA Cup, before swapping the Belgian for Japhet Tanganga at half-time.

Sanchez played 90 minutes in four of the first five Premier League games of the season, but has missed out on the matchday squad for nine of the last 11 (TransferMarkt).

Mourinho seems to prefer a first-choice central defensive partnership of Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld at the moment, with Rodon and Tanganga frequenting the bench.

However, Davinson did play both Carabao Cup games against Stoke City and Brentford in the recent quarter and semi-finals.

On why the Colombian seems to be in favour one week and out of favour the next, Mourinho said (Football London): “It happens the same with all our central defenders.

“Davinson, Alderweireld, Dier, Rodon, Tanganga. It’s not like one of them is playing every match and the other one is not playing. Davinson didn’t play the last match, but played a few, and that’s how it is.”
